I’ve mentioned it before, but this weekend is the New
Orleans Comic Con and yours truly will be there. I’m so excited. At the same
time, I’m so nervous that I’m stressing myself out. I’ve done signings, and I
know that’s all it is. But this is Comic Con, people.

I have a corner booth, which is awesome, but I’m not in such
a hotspot. I had originally asked for my spot because Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton) was going to
be right across from me. That would attract the perfect market for my book.
Then, they moved him. Yes, I wanted to cry. They changed the layout. The good
thing is when you go down my aisle it’s the gaming zone. I’m hoping they will
get thirsty from playing and walk down and find me. That would be awesome.
Draco Malfoy is still not far from me, and some other celebrities are nearby. I know there will be a stampede to the TVD boys, which is all the way to the back. I’m sure it will still be fun and an experience to remember.

If you’re going to be around, come stop by and
say hi. I’m at booth C19. I’d love to meet you or see you again. This will be
loads of fun no matter what aspect of the genre you’re into. I guarantee
there’s something for all. Don’t forget to dress up. Apparently, that’s a big
thing with Comic Cons. Hehe As if you didn’t know that.

If you said yes, then you know exactly where I'm going with this. No, not Halloween. COMIC CON.

Comic Con is a place you can truly step away from reality for some time. Watch where you walk because you may bump into a wookie or a storm trooper or the Green Goblin. Fans dress up like it's Halloween. Of course, not everyone does, if that's not your thing.

Why am I talking about this? Because someone you know and follow will be signing at the New Orleans Comic Con. That's right. This girl. Yours truly. I'll be there all weekend January 9-11, 2015. I'm totally fangirling. Celebs like Paul Wesley (The Hottie Stefan from TVD), Mark McGrath (I grew up listening to Sugar Ray

), some of the cast from Charmed, and the Bella Twins just to name a few will be there. How exciting!

Although I've been wanting to go to Comic Con for years, it'll be the first time I've ever been, and it's only the second time one has been hosted in New Orleans. Even though I'll be stuck behind my table, I'm so excited to be a part of it, and I hope this is the beginning of getting to do many across the country. I'm deep into planning for an awesome display for you guys. If you have ideas, leave me a comment. I'd love to hear them.

That being said, you better get your tickets. Go HERE for tickets. To see the amazing line-up of stars that will be there, check THIS out. If you can't get to New Orleans, I'll understand. Not. Just joking. But maybe there's a Comic Con near you that you can jump into a Sci-Fi/Fantasy Realm. Go HERE for more Comic Cons. I hope to see you there.

Armentrout. It's the fifth and final book of the Lux series.

I originally started the Monday Getaway series with this series. The original blog post is HERE. You'll understand why I have a book crush on Daemon.

As always, it's bittersweet to end a series, but I'm glad she did it here and didn't prolong it unneccessarily, which it had started to seem at one point. As with most, it was hastily written and edited, so be warned. Please don't judge the book on this. Writers get very caught up in their careers--attending signings, making appearances, doing panels, and even writing other books. I can imagine the last book in a series is also the hardest to write for writers because you're essentially saying good-bye to characters and a world that you've invested so much time and affection. It has to be the hardest thing to write just as it's hard to break up with someone. Not that this is an excuse, just stating the facts.

The blurb for Opposition:

Don't miss Opposition, the fifth and final book in Jennifer L. Armentrout’s bestselling Lux series.

"A thrilling ride from start to finish," says RT Book Reviews.

Katy knows the world changed the night the Luxen came. She can’t believe Daemon stood by as his kind threatened to obliterate every last human and hybrid on Earth. But the lines between good and bad have blurred.

Daemon will do anything to save those he loves, even if it means betrayal. But when it quickly becomes impossible to tell friend from foe, and the world is crumbling around them, they may lose everything to ensure the survival of their friends…and mankind.

I can't say any one person inspires my characters. I like to take the best of some and the worst of others and mix-mash it into my idea of who's who, but sometimes I know exactly who'd have the ability to play a character in a movie. Like Emery.

I know I've been MIA, but know I'm in the background, writing like mad. I've been exploring short stories and flash fiction to get ideas for things in the future. I've been forcing my hand in editing and improving my organization.

Also, the last few weeks, my Nook crapped out on me. I'm not dissing Nook. I loved my Nook HD+ tablet more than anything. But I was trying to make it do things it wasn't intended to do and had over 200 books on it and not to mention the 100 apps. So, I retired it as a writing device. It's become just an ereader now for my Little One, who loves the animated books on it. I bought a Surface for it's seamless connection to my computer and will start reading again, now that my Library App works again.

Walking Disaster by Jamie McGuire is Book 2 of the Maddox Brothers Series. It's the same story as Beautiful Disaster, which you can read about HERE, except this one is written through Travis's perspective. It took me a little while to get into it. I guess it was just a mental thing that I didn't want to read a book that I've already read. But I'm so glad I did.

This is the first time in a while that I'm not posting anything, besides this, for the week. My head has been in a dark place.

An aunt of mine passed away last weekend. She was my grandmother's brother's wife. She's lived a long life and has left behind a loving family. But it doesn't make it easier.

From Kindergarten through eighth grade, I went to the same Catholic elementary school. Almost every day, I saw my aunt Emily. She lived across the street from the Church of our school. Mostly when I saw her, she was out watering her garden and was one of the sweetest people you've ever met. At least to me.

When I went to high school, I saw her less. Occasionally after Church on Sundays, family reunions, the occasional visit, and whatnot.

Then in 2005, my family was thrown all over the place thanks to Hurricane Katrina. Her and her husband moved to Arizona to be closer to one of her children and grandchildren. I saw her at my wedding in 2006, but I haven't seen her since then. I know she was surrounded by her family when she passed, and I hope she knows how dear she was to me. Death is always harder on the survivors.

You know what not to do in giving and receiving critiques. Still, your hands tremble as they hover over the keyboard. What do you write? What do you look for?

I prefer receiving thorough critiques, and unless told differently that's what I give. Some writers prefer tackling one thing at a time (i.e. story structure or plot or characters alone), but it's hard for the reader to keep re-reading the same story. Things tend to get overlooked when you've read it six times already. But if that's what they want, that's fine. Just be sure to know what your critique partner is looking for beforehand. Some people suggest not to critique grammar if you're critiquing a first draft. I try really hard, but I was an English teacher, it's not something I can turn off easily. So I say that's your call.

I'm not going to talk about the etiquette of critique writing. I did that last week. Beautiful Disaster, the first of The Maddox Brothers Series by Jamie McGguire is my first New Adult read, at least what is now categorized as New Adult. The series features yet another boy with commitment issues, who meets a girl that refuses him, and he suddenly forgets he has issues. I'm not saying this is a bad thing--just a common one. I still love to read them.

I finished the main books in the Soul Screamers series by Rachel Vincent in the series last week. Finally! It was a decent series, but I have to say the ending was pure brilliance. How clever Vincent is. There are two novellas I didn't read, which were released after the end of the last book. I'll mention them here, but I didn't read them. I thought the series ending was satisfying enough. It did leave one arc unresolved, and from what I heard these shorts solve that. Maybe one day I will read it, but for now, I'm moving on.

There is a bonus of a Day in the Afterlife of Tod that's not in book form. It's not really even a story. Think of it more as a schedule--a little peek into what a typical day for Tod is like. Kind of sad and lonely. Read it: Here Then check out the blurbs for the rest of the series.

First, let me start by saying this: Critique partners and Beta Readers are two entirely different things.

A critique partner is someone who will look at your WIP(Work-in-Progress) multiple times. They will provide useful advice on the story, characters, grammar, etc. They will listen as you hash out trouble spots and work with you to make your story the best it can possibly be. They are more like editors.

A beta reader is someone who will only look at your nearly finished manuscript. They will read the story as a reader will and provide information and advice on your nearly finished manuscript. Mostly, they might realize plot holes, loose ends, flat characters, and minor grammar mistakes. They will give it a reader's perspective.

Today, we are discussing Critique Partners/Groups. How do you find them?

Where do you go from here?

If you're like me, writing the book is the easy part, so to speak. It's so much fun meeting new characters and letting them take you for a ride. I love writing new stories. I'm not such a big fan of editing. Not because I can't cut or rewrite or am afraid of the hard work. I'm not. It just bores me.

I'm trying my hardest to change my mindset. Here's my new take:

Editing is like a gem. When they first uncover a gem, it's a hot mess, right? It's surrounded by rock and is dirty and cloudy. Then they remove it and polish it. Bam! You have a beautiful diamond. Who doesn't love and appreciate a diamond. That's editing. Your first draft is ugly. But after much work and polish, you get a beautiful treasure.

I love diamonds. Can't ever have too many? hehe How to get there? Many people finish their first drafts, but don't know where to go from here. I didn't just starting out. I wish I had a list like this. It would've saved me a lot of headaches. So, I'm sharing my experience with you.

It's a day to thank all those magical fairies that make gardens beautiful, love having tea on your rose petals, and pester your dog or cat. Yes, fairies are responsible for making your dog bark for no reason in the backyard. hehe

On a serious note, there is a festival that occurs at this time to celebrate this magical day. It's the NY Faerie Festival: A Midsummer's Dream. I haven't been to it, but I'd love to one day when my baby girl gets older, and we can pretend to be fairies for a weekend. :)

Well, I actually know a few people who don't like it much. I'll never wrap my head around that. Traveling, to me, is just like reading a book or watching a move; it's an escape from reality. Except with traveling, you get to experience your own adventure. You know me I'm all about an adventure.

Being in a foreign place (It doesn't have to be a foreign country to be foreign, just a place you don't frequent often.), sparks my imagination. Although I don't usually write on my adventures, I collect as many pictures--mental and actual--for my visions later. If you're not a writer but reader, even better, these places are great for helping you see author's ideas. Even if the novel is on a desert plains in the Andromeda Galaxy, I can assure you the author is basing this on a desert he's been to before.
